Frequently Asked Questions - General

What is a PLM software ?

PLM means  Product Lifecycle Management.

In a nutshell, it's a software that helps people who work on product development i.e. Doctors, Engineers, Technicians, ... managing their technical data like CAD files, ECAD files, code files but also Ms Office/OpenOffice/LibreOffice/GoogleDoc files.

It's a common vault where all data are stored in a single copy. It makes them easy to find and accessible from remote locations.

It's a system which also describes the product structures (or BOM) and their changes over time.

That way, it ensures full traceability of the product and associated data from first marketing sketches to production and maintenance stages.

Do I have to pay something to use OpenPLM ?

No. OpenPLM is totally free to use, to download, to redistribute, or to modify. It is an  open source software, published under the terms of  GPLv3 software license which guarantee you those freedoms, and, even more important, guarantee you that these freedoms will never be taken from you.

You can find some information  here.

I can't find the Document I just created. What's wrong ?

You can rebuild the search index ( Configure the search engine) and see if openPLM finds your parts.

It is possible that celery can not update the search index. You can check celery’s log (/var/log/celery/*.log) and see if it contains lines like

[.. INFO/MainProcess] Got task from broker: openPLM.plmapp.tasks.update_index[...]

It may be a permission problem and

chown www-data:www-data -R /var/openPLM/xapian_index/

may fix it.
